Civic Center

Civic Center, bordered by Cesar Chavez and 1st streets, Hope and Los Angeles streets has the largest concentration of government employees in the United States outside of Washington D.C. Over 93,000 employees travel in and out of the Civic Center area every day to help support the 10 million residents living in Los Angeles County.

Civic Center houses offices for several state and federal functions and is home to the Criminal Courts building, County Courthouse, Federal Courthouse and Hall of Justice.

City Hall

Located at the heart of Civic Center is the historic treasure City Hall. Built in 1928, City Hall was an icon of modern architecture and the tallest building in Los Angeles boasting an impressive 28 stories.

Caltrans

A few blocks from City Hall is the newly opened Caltrans building. Designed by Thom Mayne, this architectural wonder is a mix of technological brilliance and urban design. The exterior skin is perforated aluminum that opens and closes to accommodate sun and shade. It is home to Caltrans District 7 headquarters, the city and state transportation departments.

Los Angeles Times Building

Located at 1st and Spring streets, the Los Angeles Times building opened in 1935 and was occupied entirely as a daily newspaper publishing operation. Designed by Gorden Kaufmann, the Globe Lobby is one of the aesthetic highlights of the Times building. Its 10-foot high murals were painted by Hugo Ballin and represent some of the finest murals produced in LA during the 1930s.

LA Mall

Only a block away from City Hall is the LA Mall. Food and amenities can be found during the weekdays at LA Mall located at 201 N. Los Angeles Street. Sit -down restaurants and grab-n-go delis are located in the lower court area as well as many shops including a B. Dalton Booksellers and Sav-On.
